What Does The Bible Say About Essential Oils???

This blog post is an adaptation from a class I did last year on Healing Oils of the Bible. The class had so much great information that I wanted to share it here for anyone who wasn’t a part of the class.

UPDATE- Since writing this blog post, I found this AWESOME video with a ton of AMAZING info!! It is called Ancient Secrets Of Essential Oils!! Check it out... You will LOVE it!!

Have you ever wondered what's the deal about essential oils? Did you know that this isn't a new trend or gimmick? Essential oils have been used for thousands of years and are even written about in Scripture!! 😀💖🤓

Essential oils are amazing and the benefits I've seen in my life have been awesome!!
In this post I am going to share with you all about essential oils, what they are and where they've come from. I'll also be highlighting some of the specific oils found in scripture and their historical uses. 💖💖💖

Ok, Let's get started...

First of all, did you know that essential oils have been used for healing, cleansing and holy anointing for thousands of years and are mentioned in the Bible over 500 times?!

“There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spendeth it up.” Proverbs‬ ‭21:20‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“And by the river upon the bank thereof, on this side and on that side, shall grow all trees for meat, whose leaf shall not fade, neither shall the fruit thereof be consumed: it shall bring forth new fruit according to his months, because their waters they issued out of the sanctuary: and the fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine.” ‭‭Ezekiel‬ ‭47:12‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Well, quickly for those who don’t know what essential oils are or how they work...

Essential oils are the lifeblood of plants. Just like our own blood has dynamic properties for healing and supporting our body systems, so the oils have unique and dynamic properties that cause plants to have the dynamic properties they have. When this oil is collected properly, these essential oils become a super concentrated form of those properties that we can use for our own health and wellness goals.

You see, when God created the plants on day three, He already had us in mind. Everything within God’s creation was created for our use and for our good. The oils of the plants were created with the exact chemical components that work perfectly within our body systems to allow us to support our health in ways western medicine never will be able to. Men can not replicate God’s perfect creation!

The key is to learn how to use oils and all of God’s creation to benefit our own health goals.

Next, I want to highlight a few scriptures and oils that are mentioned in the Bible and some historical uses and benefits.

#1: JOY

You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of Joy.
Hebrews 1:9

Joy essential oil blend is a mix of several oils most notably being Rose oil. Rose oil was definitely used in biblical times for uplifting the spirit and bringing joy to people. With the highest electromagnetic frequency of any known substance at 320 MHz, it is very commonly used to help uplift and bring gladness to those who use it. There are many references to anointing with the oil of gladness or joy, and it shows me that the Lord knows that there are times we will need help to remain in the joy of the Lord and that essential oils are an excellent way to enhance our ability to be joyful even in difficult times.

The cedars of Lebanon were considered in Biblical times to be the Cedars of the Lord due to their immense size and strength as well as the lifespan which was around 2,000 years. The bible refers to the Cedarwood many times and frequently scripture tells of instructions for people to use Cedarwood for building materials for Kings and Temples and because the Cedars were so full of oils, the buildings would smell of the essential oils within the building material.

One of the known benefits of cedarwood are enhancing mental clarity and awareness which helped with prayer and meditation. This is because it is the essential oil with the highest concentration of sesquiterpines (98%). The sesquiterpines in cedarwood have the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and increase oxygenation and beneficial effects from the oil immediately upon inhalation. Although the biochemistry wasn't known in ancient times, it is likely the reason the Lord instructed the people of Biblical times to use this precious wood in temples and other important building.

I personally LOVE cedarwood and use it every night to help with rest and relaxation before bed. There are many amazing benefits that come from Cedarwood and I highly highly recommend trying it if you haven't already!!!

Scriptures specifically relating to Cedarwood essential OIL in use of cleansing and healing-
Leviticus 14:4,6,49,51,52; Numbers 19:6

Cinnamon bark is one of the ingredients in the AMAZING and ALL POWERFUL Thieves essential oil blend from Young Living. All of the ingredients in Thieves are very powerful immune boosting oils including Cinnamon Bark. Cinnamon oil was used in ancient times as a sacred anointing oil and perfume.

In Exodus 30:23 Cinnamon, along with Myrrh, Calamus, and Cassia, is used as a sacred anointing oil in the temple making it a Most Holy Place and anyone touching it also became Holy. I can only imagine that part of the Lord's desire in using Cinnamon oil in this anointing oil was to cleanse the Most Holy place making it a place where the priest's immune systems would be supported and strengthened through the inhalation of the oil as well as in touching the surfaces anointed within the temple.

Myrrh is the most frequently mentioned essential oil in the Bible. I can't possibly go through each reference but I will bring to you the most notable to me from my research.
First off I am reminded that Myrrh was brought to Jesus as a gift for His birth (Matthew 2:11) and so was one of the first essential oils used in His life. Also, it is within the anointing ointment that was placed on Jesus shortly before His Crucifixion (Mark 14:3,4) making it one of the last oils He used in His life. To me that speaks to the importance and value both physically and spiritually of Myrrh.

"In ancient times, Myrrh was used by pregnant women for protection against infectious diseases and elevating feelings of well-being. They also believed it would protect their unborn children from generational curses. (Exodus 20:5, 34:7; Numbers 14:18) During labor it was used to reduce anxiety and facilitate calmness by direct inhalation and was used topically during labor as well to assist with the physical act of labor. It was customarily used on the newborns umbilical cord to prevent infection  and which also symbolically represented the cutting of generational curses inherited from ancestors.
Also in ancient times Myrrh was used for skin conditions, oral hygiene, embalming, and as an insect repellent... Egyptians carried cones of fat on their heads containing Myrrh that would melt in the desert heat and keep their bodies bathed in Myrrh." excerpts directly from Healing Oils of the Bible by Dr David Stewart

Cypress wood is mentioned in the Bible many times, mainly for uses in building. And Cypress essential oil information is also found in many other ancient texts. Specific scriptural uses are limited more to using the wood but through research of other texts from biblical times we know that Cypress essential oil was used for many medicinal uses. Some of these historical uses include Arthritis, laryngitis, reducing scar tissue, cramps, and reducing pain.
Current uses of Cypress essential oil are supporting the cardiovascular system health and emotional uses such as easing the feeling of loss and promoting feelings of security and grounding. The benefits of use of Cypress essential oil both historically and in current times is astounding and it is another oil I use everyday!!

Exodus II is the first of two Biblical blends of oils I am highlighting today.

This unique blend of oils contains:

and Calamus

All these oils are specifically mentioned in the Bible as anointing, cleansing, healing and fragrant oils all of which are precious to the Lord for many reasons. He instructed the priests to use these oils to consecrate and cleanse the Most Holy Place and they were so respected and revered for the properties known to all in those days that they were also used in everyday life by many of the people of the times.

Some of the scriptural references include: Exodus 12:22, 30:23,24, 30, 34-36; Song of Solomon 1:12, 4:13,14; Psalm 45:8; Ezekial 27:19; and many many more.

#7: 3 WISE MEN
3 Wise men is the second blend that is formulated specifically of Biblical oils.

The ingredients are:

This blend promotes feelings of reverence and spiritual awareness, balances emotions, and uplifts the spirit. Some scriptural references include John 19:39; Job 30:4; Matthew 2:11; Mark 15:23

#8: last but certainly not least- FRANKINCENSE

Let us take a moment of silence for THE FRANKINCENSE!!
I can't even start to tell you how amazing and life changing this oil is!!!!

For those of you who are oilers already, you no doubt are already in love with and maybe a little obsessed with FRANKINCENSE

Let me get back to the ancient times and all the uses of this beloved oil. Frank was used as a Holy Anointing oil. It was also known in ancient times as a "cure-all"  used for many many medicinal uses (and still is, BTW). Frank was used to enhance meditation and elevate spiritual consciousness. It was believed to assist one in the transition of death, was used for embalming, and as perfume. Frankincense was used to anoint newborns, especially the newborn sons of kings and priests (which may be why it was a baby gift for Jesus).

Scripture references: Exodus 30:34; Leviticus 1:15 & 16, 2:1, 5:11, 6:15, 24:7; Numbers 5:15, 16:46-50 (Aaron stops a plague); I Chron 9:29, Nehemiah 13:5,9; Song of Solomon 3:6, 4:6,14; Isaiah 59:20, 60:3,6, 66:3; Jeremiah 6:20, 17:26, 41:5 (the scriptures from Isaiah and Jeremiah read in our English translations as incense but apparently in each case the original word 'lebonah' is used and means Frankincense) Matthew 2:11; Revelation 18:13

I truly want to thank you with all my heart for reading this and learning about what the Bible says about essential oils and how amazing they are. It's such a blessing to share this information!!

You need YOUR armor and NOT theirs!

I saw this saying on someone else’s page and thought how important a message it is.

“You can’t beat YOUR Goliath using somebody else’s armor” ~Tony Evans

In this age where everyone is online sharing their ways to do anything and everything, we can easily start comparing and feeling like we need to do exactly what others have done to reach OUR goals.

Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of great leaders with many useful tools and experience to share.... and we should definitely try to learn lessons from others and grow whenever we can.
BUT WE MUST REMEMBER!! God equipped us each perfectly and uniquely to succeed in the plan and purpose He made us for. We cannot get bogged down in feeling like we must put on someone else’s armor for the battle we are meant to fight.
If you remember the story, David came up to the battle and said he could slay Goliath with God’s help. David was smaller than all the warriors there and Saul said that he should wear armor. Since David didn’t have armor, Saul g…

What do I have to complain about??? I’ll tell you...

Wow! So I had an awesome epiphany today and just had to share it!!!
Ok it goes back a while, really, so I need to start my story around a year ago... ok maybe 3 and a half years ago. LOL
So, about 3 and a half years ago I had the privilege of going on a week long mission trip to an orphanage in Guatemala. It was actually my second week long trip to this same orphanage with my church. The orphanage is called Casa Shalom (House of Peace) and it is also known as “the place where my heart lives”. I could write forever about how amazing it is to serve these kids and the people of Guatemala. But that’s not really the point.
However, it is amazing and my heart was so at home there that I hated leaving. In fact, I hated it so much that I had to take every bit of my saving and go back on my own for a 6 week internship so I could just be there and serve longer. Those 6 weeks were life changing!!! I mean, EVERYTHING changed after that.
My whole mission at that point was to be a full-time miss…
